SPLIT, May 18 (Hina) - The US Ambassador to Croatia, Robert Bradtke, visited the southern coastal city of Split on Friday, expressing his satisfaction with the implementation of a US aid programme as part of which USD 2.2 million had been invested in the area.

His hosts, Mayor Zvonimir Puljic and County Prefect Ante Sanader, informed him of plans for the development of the city and the county.

Bradtke said he would like to see an increase in trade between Croatia and the United States, particularly an increase in US investment, noting that economic cooperation was not as good as political cooperation.

Speaking of tourism, Bradtke said that a few days ago he had attended a meeting of US travel agencies, which had forecast a significant increase in the number of US tourists visiting Croatia.

Americans find the city and the county of Split one of the most attractive destinations, he said, stressing the importance of developing tourism facilities.

Bradtke also stressed the importance of Croatia's efforts to attract Internet technologies.

After the talks with Puljic and Sanader, the US ambassador met representatives of local non-governmental organisations.

Speaking to reporters, Bradtke said he was quite optimistic about expectations that Croatia might join the European Union in 2009 or 2010, assessing that Croatia's EU entry would further improve the otherwise good relations between the US and Croatia.

In this context, he mentioned countries that had joined the EU in the latest round of enlargement, saying that their trade with the US had doubled since then.

As for Croatia's aspirations to join NATO, the US ambassador reiterated that he would like to see Croatia in the alliance, adding that in that case Croatia would be an even stronger factor of security in this part of Europe.
