ZAGREB, May 18 (Hina) - The nongovernmental organisation for
monitoring elections whose acronym in Croatian is GONG and members of the
National Minorities' Council on Friday presented a campaign aimed at raising
awareness among ethnic minorities members about the importance of the election
for ethnic minorities' councils in units of local self-government.
The Croatian government recently called elections for representatives of ethnic
minority councils in local self-government units for 17 June. The first
elections for those councils were held on 18 May 2003, and their four-year term
will soon expire.
GONG and the private Stina news agency have prepared TV clips,
commercials and educational leaflets as well as 15-minute radio broadcasts on
this topic, which will be aired by local radio stations in towns and villages
populated by minorities.
GONG and Stina have received about 160,000 kuna for this purpose.
The elections will be held for 308 minorities councils and for 228
representatives of minorities throughout Croatia.
