Addressing the session, Croatia's Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, spoke about the centuries-long history of this biggest Croatian Adriatic city listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
She recalled that Split was the venue for the first session the Ivo Sanader held outside Zagreb at the start of its term in office in 2004.
Kosor also pointed out the importance of the Zagreb-Split highway which she said had opened new economic opportunities and helped homogenise Croatia.
She spoke about assistance the Government offered to Split, including the allocation of real estate for the modernised city's library and funds for the construction of the highway further towards the seaport of Ploce.
Split Mayor Zvonimir Puljic spoke about the recent projects in the city, such as the reconstruction of the waterfront Riva, the construction of the puppet theatre and so on.
Split Catholic Archbishop Marin Barisic also addressed the special session.
