Croats say decisions of joint minorities commission not implemented in Serbia

Autor: mses
SUBOTICA, Sept 11 (Hina) - Recommendations and guidelines adopted by the Croatian-Serbian joint commission for national minorities' protection are not being implemented in Serbia, representatives of local Croats said at the Croatian National Council's (HNV) meeting in Subotica on Saturday.

Textbooks for students enrolled in Croatian classes have not been yet approved by the Serbian ministry and the forthcoming rationalisation of the schooling system may lead to the reduction of Croatian classes which have been formed with difficulty, Council member Petar Kuntic was quoted as saying by the Vojvodina broadcaster's (RTV) programme in the Croatian language.

Kuntic, the leader of the parliamentary DSHV party, pointed out to the unsolved status of reporters in the RTV Croatian language broadcasting service.

According to Kuntic, the joint commission makes important agreements but its recommendations are hardly being implemented on the ground.

The HNV council representing Croats in Serbia called for the protection of ethnic Croats' acquired rights in Serbia. It is opposed to merger of Croatian classes from several schools, as this will gradually stop the education in the Croatian language in Serbia.

The council also asked the management of the Croatian HRT national broadcaster to give up its plan to close its correspondent's office in Belgrade.
