HNV leader Slaven Bacic told a news conference in Subotica on Tuesday that parents of first-graders who enrolled their children in Croatian classes would be awarded an additional EUR 100 as financial aid.
"This is a kind of acknowledgement to parents for enrollment (in Croatian classes), which, unfortunately, still requires courage," Bacic said.
The new HNV leadership treats the organisation of education in Croatian in Serbia as the top priority.
Currently, the number of pupils in Croatian classes is disproportionately low given the size of the Croat community.
A score of Croat first-graders are registered in elementary schools in Subotica and the nearby villages of Djurdjin and Tavankut.
There are some 30 Croatian freshmen in two high schools in Subotica.
Slightly over 400 pupils attend classes in Croatian in several elementary schools and two high schools in Subotica.
