ZAGREB/STRASBOURG, April 17 (Hina) - The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly on Tuesday accepted the recommendation of the Political Affairs Committee that Montenegro become the Council's 47th member state, the Assembly said on its website.

Montenegro applied for membership of the CoE on 6 June 2006, three days after its parliament proclaimed independence.

The Political Affairs Committee suggested to the Parliamentary Assembly to recommend to the Committee of Ministers to invite Montenegro to become a CoE member in the wake of the progress Montenegro has made in many fields and the political will expressed by its authorities to pursue reforms.

Addressing the Assembly, Montenegrin Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic said he was pleased with the positive assessments and reiterated that Montenegro was committed to European and CoE values. He underlined that Montenegro's independence was built on multiethnic society values and voiced confidence that his country would continue to set an example in the region.

The Committee of Ministers will decide on Montenegro's accession to the CoE on June 10-11.

The Croatian delegation to the CoE Parliamentary Assembly is attending the organisation's spring session in Strasbourg, the Croatian parliament said in a statement.
