HSP accuses gov't of trying to introduce unlimited import of GMO

ZAGREB, April 3 (Hina) - Parliamentarians of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP), Miroslav Rozic and Pero Kovacevic, have accused the government of trying to fully liberalise imports of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) through transitional provisions of a new Food Safety Act.

Rozic and Kovacevic told a news conference in Zagreb on Tuesday that the bill with proposed interim provisions stipulated the revocation of the existing law on GMOs which the two described as the only barrier to the unlimited import of GMOs into Croatia.

"Croatian agriculture is dead if we start importing GMO seed of various cereals, given that GMO-free production has been the only advantage over the competition," Rozic said.

He added that the European Union had advised its member-states to prevent the proliferation of GMOs as much as possible.

Rozic interpreted this as a suggestion for banning GMO seed and GMO fodder in the EU.

On the other hand, the EU asked Croatia to adopt the bill by the end of March, which Rozic portrayed as hypocritical, assessing that the EU would like to protect its members and make Croatia import GMOs without any restrictions.

The HSP officials recalled that the voting on the bill failed in the Sabor last Friday for lack of a quorum.
