KARLOVAC, March 30 (Hina) - The Green Network, which gathers 12
environmentalist associations from Karlovac County, issued a statement on
Friday demanding that charges be pressed against competent services and
inspections due to a recent ecological incident involving the local "Karlovacka
Pivovara" brewery. Zdravko Martinovic, 64, died on March 20 after
he fell into a coma while taking a walk near a canal carrying sewage from the
Karlovacka Pivovara brewery in Karlovac on 23 February.
The 150-year-old brewery, owned by the Heineken Group, is suspected of
having dumped carbon dioxide waste into the local sewerage, which is believed
to have caused Martinovic's coma. Preliminary check-ups showed that he had a
high concentration of ammonia in his blood.
