WASHINGTON, March 16 (Hina) - The US Senate on Friday adopted a resolution supporting further NATO enlargement and calling for the timely accession of Croatia, Macedonia and Albania -- signatories to the Adriatic Charter -- and former Soviet republics Ukraine and Georgia.

The resolution says that those five countries are entitled to US assistance in preparations to join NATO.

The House of Representatives last week adopted an identical resolution.

Depending on their continued implementation of democratic, military and economic reforms, and on their will and capability to meet the responsibilities of NATO membership, and on the clearly expressed intention of the people to do so, Congress calls for the timely admission of Albania, Croatia, Georgia, Macedonia and Ukraine to NATO in the interest of promoting security and stability in Europe, reads the resolution.

After it was adopted by the House of Representatives and the Senate, the resolution will be sent to President George W. Bush for signing, after which it will go into force.

Congress adopted similar resolutions before previous NATO enlargement rounds.

According to conclusions from the latest NATO summit in Riga, the Adriatic Charter countries may expect invitations to join the alliance in the first half of 2008.
