OREBIC, March 3 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Saturday that Croatia would go ahead with its plan to build a bridge that would connect the southern peninsula of Peljesac with the mainland, stressing that the bridge would help revitalise Peljesac, the adjacent islands of Korcula and Lastovo and the rest of the country's south.

"We respect Bosnia and Herzegovina, it's our friend, but we also respect the right of Croatia to connect its two territories by a bridge," Sanader said at a ceremony marking the 17th anniversary of foundation of his party's branch in Orebic, on the Peljesac peninsula.

The bridge would connect the southernmost part of Croatia, which is cut off from the rest of the country at Neum, where neighbouring Bosnia-Herzegovina has a narrow outlet to the Adriatic Sea.

Sanader said that the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) had a good platform for forthcoming parliamentary elections, citing several projects that were to be implemented in Dubrovnik-Neretva County.

In addition to the construction of the Peljesac bridge, which is to begin soon, the prime minister also announced the construction of a 97-km-long motorway between Split and Ploce, which is to be completed by the end of next year.

"We are planning to go farther than Dubrovnik. The road will enter Bosnia and Herzegovina at the village of Osojnik, and we will build a fast road between Dubrovnik and its airport," Sanader said.
