ZAGREB, Feb 22 (Hina) - More than 96 per cent of land registry files were digitised in 2006 as part of the National Real Property Registration and Cadastre Program, known as Organized Land, whose results were presented at the Justice Ministry on Thursday.

Backlogs in the settlement of land registry cases were reduced by more than 50 per cent from September 2004 and now amount to about 140,000, while the number of new cases went up 35 per cent, Justice Minister Ana Lovrin said, adding that the World Bank applauded the project.

All written cadastral data are available on the Internet, all cadastral offices settle cases within legal deadlines, and more than 50 per cent of cadastral plans is digitised, the Justice Ministry said.

A survey conducted last November showed that physical persons graded land registry services with 4.2 and cadastre services with 4.7 out of five, while regular users, such as geodetic engineers and lawyers, graded their satisfaction with said services with three and four out of five respectively.

Assistant Justice Minister Boris Koketi said next year's plans include reducing the number of backlog land registry cases to a minimum.

The head of the State Geodetic Administration, Zeljko Bacic, said the basic objective of the project was the establishment of the Joint Information System. In order for data to be as up-to-date as possible, he called on citizens to check on the Internet if their property is properly described and if they are registered as owners, and to report changes to the cadastre and land registry departments at municipal courts.

The "Organised Land" project was launched in 2003 with a view to developing an efficient land management system, making the real estate market more effective, and raising legal security in real estate transactions to a higher level.

The EUR45 million project is financed with a World Bank loan, European Union donations, and from the national budget.
