WASHINGTON/OTTAWA, Feb 8 (Hina) - Croatian Agriculture and Water Management Minister Petar Cobankovic met the Canadian Fisheries and Ocean Minister, Loyola Hearn, in Ottawa on Thursday for talks on the protection of fishing areas.

"We exchanged experiences concerning the protection of the fishing areas which is very important for Croatia in connection with the declared Ecological and Fisheries Protected Zone," Cobankovic said in a telephone interview.

The meeting also focused on tuna quotas and difficulties Canadian fisherman are faced with concerning a drastic fall in the catch of codfish in the past several years, the minister said.

Cobankovic also visited the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which approves the import of agricultural and food products in Canada. The agency last year approved the import of canned meat products from Croatia and Croatia is now asking that this approval be expanded to include the import of prosciutto and other dry meat products.

Cobankovic said he had great expectations of his meeting with Canadian Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl, whom he is scheduled to meet on Thursday afternoon, local time.

The two ministers will visit Vancouver on Friday and tour a centre for the production of organic foods and a farm near that city on the Pacific coast.

Cobankovic is on an official visit to Canada and the United States between February 7 and 19, at the invitation of the Canadian Minister Strahl and on the occasion of the world's largest farming fair - World Ag Expo - held in California. Some 1,600 exhibitors will present their products at the fair.
