ZAGREB, Jan 16 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Tuesday received Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico with whom he discussed the process of Croatia's joining the European Union and Croatia-Slovakia economic cooperation, the Office of the Croatian President said in a statement.

Stressing that Croatia and Slovakia have very good bilateral relations, Mesic said the two countries needed to advance economic ties, the statement said.

The President also stressed the importance of using Slovakia's experience in the process of joining the European Union.

Slovakian PM Fico said he was confident Slovakia's experience in the process of joining the European Union and NATO would help Croatia, adding that in implementing reforms it was extremely important to make decisions that citizens were ready and able to accept, the statement said.

Fico also said that further EU enlargement was in Slovakia's interest, adding that he expected 2007 to be the most successful year for Slovakia in terms of the economy.

The Slovakian official expressed interest in Croatia's experience in building highways. He also said he expected that more Slovakian tourists would visit Croatia and vice versa.

The talks also focused on the current state of affairs in the region.

The Slovakian PM also held talks with Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks about support to Croatia's bid to join the European Union and NATO, the Office of the Parliament Speaker said in a statement.

Seks thanked Fico for his country's support to Croatia's independence 15 years ago, as well as for Slovakia's assistance during Croatia's EU membership talks.

Fico said he was satisfied with his visit to Croatia, adding that there were no outstanding issues in bilateral relations.
