BRUSSELS, Jan 31 (Hina) - The Prosecutor's Office of the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has not
requested that Croatian generals Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac return to ICTY's
detention unit, the decision was made by the judge, ICTY Chief Prosecutor
Carla del Ponte said in Brussels on Wednesday. The request did not
come from the Prosecutor's Office but from the Trial Chamber, del Ponte said,
adding that the decision was made in accordance with the tribunal's
regulations.
A trial chamber of the Hague war crimes tribunal last Friday suspended
its decision granting provisional release to the two generals and ordered that
they return to the tribunal's detention unit on February 8 so that they could
take part in a status conference in the case the following day.
Cermak and Markac surrendered voluntarily to the ICTY immediately
after their indictment was made public and in December 2004 were granted
provisional release.
