MOSTAR, Jan 24 (Hina) - The Herzegovina-Neretva Canton Court on Wednesday sentenced eight Muslim ex-members of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina to a total 17 years in jail for war crimes against Croats imprisoned in a Mostar school during the Croat-Muslim conflicts in 1993.

The eight men mistreated and beat the Croat prisoners, of whom some later died as a result, thus breaching international law and the Geneva convention on prisoners of war, said the verdict.

One of the prisoners was Croatian Army member Josip Kordic who had civilian status, said the president of the Trial Chamber, Hamo Kebo.

This was actually a retrial. The eight Muslims were first tried before the same court two years ago, but the Bosnian Federation Supreme Court asked for a retrial based on defence appeals requesting acquittals.

Mirsad Cupina was given four years in jail, Predrag Ajkic and Zijad Rezovic each three years, Mili Sisic two and a half years, Ibrahim Orucevic 18 months, while Nezir Pribisic, Husnija Orucevic and Hilmo Toporan were each given 12 months in jail.
