ZAGREB, Jan 2 (Hina) - Twenty-two applicants have replied to the government's invitation for four members of Hina's Governing Council, Culture Ministry spokeswoman Suncana Glavak told Hina on Tuesday, adding the applications would be sent to the government by the end of the week.

The deadline for submitting the applications ended on December 27. Based on the applications, the government will propose to parliament to appoint the four members.

The government invited the applications on December 12, after parliament relieved of duty four Hina Governing Council members -- Bozo Skoko, Dijana Katica, Drazen Jovic and Ivan Rusan. The government requested their dismissal because on October 12, without the Council's fifth member, a representative of the agency's staff, they elected a new director, Smiljanka Skugor Hrncevic, to a four-year term. The government said they thus deprived the staff of an opportunity to say their opinion about the candidates for the director's post, and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader called that a "democratic deficit".

In October, the government proposed to parliament to appoint Vladimir Lulic to represent Hina's employees in the Governing Council.

Skugor Hrncevic yesterday took office from Mirko Bolfek.

In the government's invitation, the applicants are expected to be media, economic-financial, legal and information technology experts.

A member of Hina's Governing Council cannot be a state official, a person holding a post in a political party, or a person employed by a competing company due to possible conflict of interest.

Members of Hina's Governing Council are appointed to a four-year term.
