DORH says weekly makes rash allegations about probe into Sanader

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, Aug 17 (Hina) - The Office of the Croatian Chief State Prosecutor (DORH) said on Tuesday that allegations in the Nacional weekly that an investigation was under way into the circumstances of Hypo Bank's approval of loans to the Globus Grupa "are premature, to say the least".

DORH issued a press release on its web site in connection with the Nacional weekly's article on "the first investigation against (former Prime Minister Ivo) Sanader", warning that some segments of the article "lead to wrong conclusions".

DORH emphasises that the article contains conclusions drawn exclusively by the author and that they are not based on the findings collected so far by the prosecutors.

In that context, DORH dismisses claims that it has collected enough facts to launch proceedings in this case.

DORH recalls having stated on several occasions that it is cooperating with Austrian agencies in investigations into business operations of Hypo Bank.

The cooperation is intensive and the findings of preliminary inquiries in this case are important for establishing the circumstances under which Hypo Bank granted loans to the Globus group and for identifying people involved in those transactions, the prosecutor's office said.

Stressing that the Nacional weekly has made rash allegations about the ongoing investigation in this case, DORH recalls that it is obliged to provide the court with evidence and facts or strong indications that would corroborate allegations that a person has committed the crime he or she is charged with.

Therefore, conclusions and claims made by the article's author which are based on one statement and fail to meet the aforementioned conditions are groundless and are not the position of the Office of the Chief State Prosecutor, DORH stated.

Finally, DORH has not given any information to anyone in this case because it cannot make assessments of any case before a decision is made by the prosecutor in charge, DORH said.
