Croatia's foreign trade deficit on decline

ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - Croatia's trade with other countries in the first five months of 2009 was marked by imports falling at a higher rate than exports and consequently by a drop in the trade deficit, the central bureau of statistics (CROSTAT) said on Tuesday.
ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - Croatia's trade with other countries in the first five months of 2009 was marked by imports falling at a higher rate than exports and consequently by a drop in the trade deficit, the central bureau of statistics (CROSTAT) said on Tuesday.

Expressed in the national currency kuna, Croatia's exports totalled HRK 23.49 billion, 15.5 percent down year on year.

In the said period, imports fell 25.2 percent to HRK 46.69 billion.

The foreign trade deficit thus totalled HRK 23.2 billion, 33.5 percent lower than in the first five months of 2008.

The import-export ratio at the end of May was 50.4 percent, after being at 50.2 percent at the end of April.

Expressed in the euro, Croatia's exports in the first five months of 2009 totalled EUR 3.17 billion, 16.9 percent down year on year.

Imports fell 26.8 percent to EUR 6.3 billion.

The foreign trade deficit thus totalled EUR 3.13 billion.

Expressed in the US dollar, exports fell 28.4 percent to USD 4.18 billion, and imports dropped 37 percent to USD 8.3 billion, with the foreign trade deficit amounting to USD 4.12 billion or 43.8 percent down year on year.
