ZAGREB, July 9 (Hina) - The Croatian Television (HTV) news programme editor in chief, Hloverka Novak Srzic, said at a session of the national broadcasting corporation (HRT) programmes council she had professionally and autonomously decided to air a 50-minute recording of Ivo Sanader's speech at the Croatian Democratic Union's (HDZ) convention as it was in her opinion a matter of public interest and that the public interests would be damaged had she decided otherwise.

However, some members of the programmes council said today that last Saturday's broadcasting of Sanader's speech was contrary to the Electronic Media Act and to the HRT Act.

I have consulted law experts and I have violated no law. There is no law to withhold the right to information, Novak Srzic said adding that the event, that is Sanader's speech at his party's convention, should be in its entirety presented to the public.

Asked whether anybody from the HDZ asked her to air Sanader's speech, Novak Srzic answered in the negative.

Hasim Bahtijari, a council member, told today's session that HTV made a mistake by airing that speech, adding that the television should have presented the event in some other form.

The question whether HTV violated relevant legislation by airing Sanader's speech in its entirety a few hours after the convention was first raised by the opposition Social Democratic Party.

The Electronic Media Council will ask for recordings of relevant shows of television stations which covered the Croatian Democratic Union's (HDZ) convention on Saturday and Ivo Sanader's speech and after that it will take a position on whether the law on electronic media was violated in this case.

The issue of the TV coverage of the HDZ party's convention was discussed at the Electronic Media Council's session on Monday.
