ZAGREB, July 29 (Hina) - Members of parliament from the ruling Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ) said during a parliamentary debate on a
proposed VAT increase late on Tuesday evening that the proposal to
increase the VAT rate from 22 percent to 23 percent as of August 1
would help alleviate the problem of illiquidity, while MPs from the
opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Croatian People's
Party (HNS) questioned the proposal, warning of a possible rise in
prices and a drop in consumption.
