"Croatian wines meet world quality standards. Export to the United States has been on the rise in recent years, however, for greater headway to be made it is necessary to brand our country more strongly. Croatia has to be recognised not only as a tourist destination but also as a wine destination and the HGK is here to facilitate such efforts," HGK chairman Luka Burilovic has been quoted as saying.
The US market is one of the top five markets for Croatian wine-makers, apart from the EU.
Of the 22 wineries that were promoted at the New York event, 15 already have their distributors on the US market.
The owner of the chain of Delmonico's restaurants, Dennis Turcinovic, was quoted in the HGK press release as saying that the marketing of Croatian wines should be stepped up.
Delmonico's in New York's financial centre serves several Croatian wines. In order to make Americans more interested in drinking Croatian wines, stronger marketing is necessary, Turcinovic was quoted as saying.
