Croatian Book Month 2017 starts

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, Oct 13 (Hina) - Culture Minister Nina Obuljen Korzinek marked the start of Croatian Book Month 2017 in a primary school in the coastal town of Crikvenica on Friday.

Obuljen Korzinek said that this year's Croatian Book Month, featuring numerous programmes focusing on books, was dedicated to encyclopedias.

All the events will underline the exceptional importance of books, libraries and anything related to our oldest medium, said Obuljen Korzinek, noting that her ministry cared for libraries and librarianship and made efforts to maintain the quality of that activity throughout the country.

She underlined the ministry's active role in assistance to publishers, notably following the first major crisis in that sector earlier this year, and noted that intensive efforts were being made to promote the purchase of books for libraries.

Obuljen Korzinek said that the government was soon expected to adopt a national strategy to promote reading, to be financed from the European Social Fund.

She also announced a new law on librarianship and libraries, which was expected to be put to public debate next month.

Croatian Book Month will last from October 15 to November 15, and its programmes will be marked by visits and meetings with renowned Croatian and regional writers.

The event will feature some 2,000 programmes and involve 213 libraries.
