Panel says cyclotourism is ecologically more sustainable, more profitable

Author: Hari Alfeo

ZAGREB, Sept 21 (Hina) - There cannot be a more sustainable and more ecologically aware society without changing the transport system, and cyclotourism is the right path towards that, a panel in Zagreb concluded on Thursday at which European Parliament member Michael Cramer (Greens) presented his vision of cyclotourism.

The panel was held as part of European Mobility Week and hosted by Croatian MEP Davor Skrlec (Greens).

European Mobility Week is being held for the 16th year in a row and the events held as part of it discuss legislation which should result in sustainable mobility in the next decade, notably in the context of the Paris climate agreement, which the European Union has signed.

A panel on sustainable mobility in cities and cyclotourism was held in Koprivnica and Zagreb on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Zagreb panel heard that cyclotourism is an increasingly popular form of sustainable tourism, in which Cramer, a passionate cyclist, is an expert. He launched the EuroVelo13 cyclotourism project and is the author of a book on the Iron Curtain Trail in which he connected sustainable tourism with Europe's history and culture.

As a resident of Berlin, a city on which the Iron Curtain left its most evident mark, Cramer initiated the establishment of a route along the entire length of the Iron Curtain. Today the Iron Curtain Trail is 10,400-km-long and crosses 20 countries, from the Norway-Russia border, via 13 EU member states, including Croatia, to the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
