Korkyra Baroque festival starts on island of Korcula

ZAGREB, Sept 3 (Hina) - The sixth edition of the Baroque music festival began in the town of Korcula on the namesake island, southern Croatia, on Saturday evening with the "Moreska", a traditional sword dance involving two groups of dancers who are engaged in a mock battle over the fate of a veiled young woman.

The festival, which is being held under the auspices of Croatia's president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and the Ministry of Culture, runs through 12 September.

Some of the guests in this cultural event are The London Handel Players (Great Britain), Schikaneders Jugend (Austria), Il terzo suono (Slovenia), and world-renowned soloists including violinist Enrico Onofrio, the Croatian Baroque Ensemble, Antiphonus, a Croatian chamber vocal ensemble, and so on.

The Korkyra Baroque Festival is an international music festival established in 2012. "The Festival has not only artistic importance but is also valuable in that it helps to promote Croatian tourism. The Korkyra Baroque Festival’s offers music of an exceptional standard, attracting tourists from all over the world and enriching the cultural offering of Korcula for tourists. The concerts promote Korcula’s churches as cultural heritage, as well as the entire island as a unique architectural complex. The Korkyra Baroque Festival is one of the most important and successful baroque festivals in Croatia and abroad," according to the information posted on the festival's web site.

Opening the sixth edition of the festival, Korcula Mayor Andrija Fabris thanked Mrs Masa Unsworth and Mr Michael Unsworth for being the main initiators and sponsors of the festival.
