Meeting of ELSA presidents starts in Zagreb

Author: Ivana Tomičić Šušak

ZAGREB, Aug 23 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on Wednesday opened the 70th international meeting of the presidents of the European Law Students' Association (ELSA), held in Zagreb on 23-27 August, saying that ELSA was a platform which prepared young lawyers and law students for quality personal, professional or political development, without neglecting the idea of social responsibility.

The ELSA vision is a law-based world with cultural differences, the prime minister said, adding that activities within the organisation primarily created an atmosphere of cooperation, understanding, multilateralism, lobbying and provided an insight into the functioning of the legal profession in Europe.

The meeting, held on the premises of the the Zagreb Law School, is hosted by ELSA Zagreb, an organisation that PM Plenkovic chaired while he was a student at the Zagreb Law School. Plenkovic was also the first president of the ELSA Croatia and in 1993, he was appointed ELSA International Committee chairman in Brussels which, according to him, helped his professional career.

The president of ELSA International, Anastasia Kalinina, said this was the world's biggest non-profit and non-political association of law students and young lawyers, founded in Vienna in 1981. "The organisation is currently active in 43 European countries, bringing together over 50,000 members from nearly 350 law schools and it is headquarted in Brussels," Kalinina said.
