The project, aimed at creating conditions for the operation of the "Petofi Sandor" cultural society, had been launched by the Democratic Union of Croatian Hungarians whose president, MP Robert Jankovics, said that the new community centre would be of exceptional importance for some 400 Hungarians living in Erdut municipality, notably their efforts to preserve their language and culture.
Attending the opening ceremony were Hungary's First Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen and Croatian Culture Minister Nina Obuljen Korzinek.
She said that Croatia and Hungary were committed to further developing infrastructure as well as all other projects facilitating the life and work of the Hungarian minority in Croatia and the Croatian minority in Hungary.
A celebration of the Day of St Stephen, Hungary's first king and patron saint of Hungarians, was held at the renovated community centre and wreaths were laid in memory of 20 members of the Hungarian minority from Erdut municipality killed in Croatia's 1991-95 Homeland War.
