Over 14,000 Croats diagnosed with Parkinson's

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, April 11 (Hina) - Some 14,000 Croatians are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD), and the national association called "Parkonson and We" believes that an additional 2000-4000 are hit by this long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system but the disease has not been diagnosed yet in their case.

The association is trying to raise the awareness of this disease and thus help in timely diagnoses of this disorder that mainly affects the motor system. The symptoms generally come on slowly over time. Early in the disease, the most obvious are shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with walking.

World Parkinson’s Disease Day is observed on 11 April and marks the birthday of Dr. J Parkinson.

The above-mentioned association will hold a rally in Zagreb's downtown square "Cvjetni Trg" on Tuesday to observe this day and help raise the awareness of this chronic, degenerative neurological disorder.
