Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, Nov 27 (Hina) - A survey covering more than 400 university students, most of them under the age of 25, shows that as many as 81% of them are financed by their parents.

The survey focused on students' habits; 75% of the respondents were women and 25% were men.

Eighty-six percent of the respondents were aged under 25, 12% were aged 26-30 and only 2% were aged 31 and older. Ninety-five percent attend or attended a public university, while 5% attend or attended a private college.

Most of the respondents, 39%, lived with their parents during their studies, 34% lived in rented accommodation and 17% lived in a student dormitory. Seven percent lived in their own apartment and 3% lived in their friends' or family's apartment.

The living costs of most, or 81% of the surveyed students, are covered by their parents. Thirty-five percent of students cover their living costs with money from occasional jobs, and 26% have scholarships.

One in four respondents, or 23%, receive annual scholarships while 18% receive scholarships but not every year.

Even though half respondents said that they studied throughout the year and studied hard before exams, 45% said that they studied only before exams.

Fifty-three percent of the respondents said they studied to get more than just a passing grade, 35% studied to get the best grade, and only 12% studied to get a passing grade. Nineteen percent of male students study for a passing grade, as do 10% of female students, while 35% of female students study for the best grade as against 32% of male students.

The survey also shows that graduates are well prepared for the labour market, that they spend an average of five hours at college every day, and that physical activity is not a priority for them considering that 33% have never practised any sport, 53% have done it occasionally and only 14% have actively pursued a sport.
