Author: Hari Alfeo

ZAGREB, Aug 16 (Hina) - The world's champion in the women's discus throw, Sandra Perkovic of Croatia, won the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday by throwing 69.21 metres, defending the title won at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

The silver went to Melina Robert-Michon of France  (66.73 m) and the bronze to Denia Caballero of Cuba (65.34 m).

Perkovic is the second athlete in history who defended the Olympic gold in the women's discus throw. The first was Evelin Jahl of Germany, who first won the medal in Montreal in 1976 and then four years later in Moscow. This year Perkovic won the gold at the European Championship in Amsterdam as well as the Diamond League title.

Perkovic's latest medal is the fourth for Croatia at this year's Olympics (three golds and one silver).
