"Star Wars" sequel to be filmed in Dubrovnik

Author: Hari Alfeo

ZAGREB, Feb 12 (Hina) - Croatian Audiovisual Centre head Hrvoje Hribar on Friday confirmed, although not officially, what had been speculated for months, that a new "Star Wars" sequel would be filmed in Dubrovnik on March 9.

"Preparations for that shoot have lasted for months, but because of Disney's corporate-political tactics, no official announcements could be made," Hribar told Hina.

The eighth "Star Wars" sequel will be filmed in Dubrovnik for about ten days. Hribar said this would be one of the biggest and most expensive projects per shooting day and that the decision to shoot in Croatia was a result of successful cooperation in the system of incentives, led by "Game of Thrones", which brought Croatia nearly HRK 100 million as well as renown and a string of important deals.

Hribar said that incentives had generated HRK 330 million in revenues so far and that the film industry brought more to the budget than it received. "We feel that we are useful citizens and we work in an industry which doesn't spend but produces."

Hribar said the "Star Wars" shoot in Croatia would be an opportunity as well as an obligation for new Culture Minister Zlatko Hasanbegovic regarding the securing of budgetary funds. "This is an opportunity to deal with current problems and come out of the 1945 war and move on to star wars."
