Refugee camp in Slavonski Brod to remain open

Author: Ivana Tomičić Šušak

SLAVONSKI BROD, Feb 9 (Hina) - The refugee camp in Slavonski Brod will remain open but the number of staff will be increased or reduced in accordance with the actual needs, the Police Directorate said on Tuesday.

An announcement regarding the deployment of Croatian police to Macedonia and the introduction of a new refugee registration model on the Balkan route have given rise to speculation about the future of the refugee camp in Slavonski Brod.

The speculation has partly been encouraged by the introduction of new measures in the camp, including the cancellation of hot meals for some of the volunteers working the the camp and the termination of contracts with 50 workers hired through a public works scheme.

The Police Directorate said that sending Croatian police troops to Macedonia was arranged at a meeting of police chiefs in Skopje on February 3 when it was agreed to introduce additional standardised measures and procedures. The measures are expected to reduce the migrant pressure on the Western Balkan route. Croatian police will profile and monitor migrants at the border and allow them passage to their final destination, the Police Directorate said.
