The Agriculture Act, adopted in early March, enables donation of food, however, the implementation of the legislation has required the elaboration of by-laws and rule books, which the Agriculture Ministry has done in the meantime, Minister Tihomir Jakovina told Hina on Tuesday.
Apart from the donation of food for human consumption, the ministry also prepared rules regulating the donation of animal food.
"Croatia for the first time has the rules regulating the donation of food to halt the devastating trend of food wasting as well as to donate food to those in need," Jakovina said.
According to some estimates, 400,000 tonnes of food are discarded annually.
The rules require keeping of records of donors and define criteria for natural and legal persons to become intermediaries in food donation.
