Ogulin set to become speleological centre of Croatia

Author: Marija Šestan
OGULIN, Oct 25 (Hina) - The city of Ogulin, some 100 kilometres south-west of the capital of Zagreb, plans to become a national speleological centre and it is happy to have received support from Croatian speleologists who convened there last weekend, Mayor Jure Turkovic told Hina on Wednesday.

To this end, the local council has also adopted a EUR 13 million (HRK 99 million) document on the sustainable development of the canyon of the River Dobra and of "Đulin Ponor" (Đula's Sinkhole). The project will apply for funding from the European Union and the Tourism Ministry has already allocated 300,000 kuna as assistance in the preparation of necessary documentation, said Turkovic.

This plan envisages the revitalisation of 2,100 metres along the Dobra Canyon and a nearby park, and the project could take eight years to implement.

In 2013 a project for the protection and popularisation of the cave system "Djula-Medvedica" near Ogulin, designed as a speleological educational trail, was proclaimed by the European Speleological Federation as the best project of this kind. That project was designed as an educational footpath through Ogulin within a 16-kilometre-long cave system beneath the city. Djula's Sinkhole and the Medvedica cave are connected into one subterranean system with a total channel length of 16,396 metres.

The one-kilometre-long educational trail includes ten bilingual boards with photos and educational content.
