President wants army placed on higher alert

Author: Roberta Mlinarić
ZAGREB, Sept 17 (Hina) - President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic on Thursday held talks with the Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff, General Drago Lovric, whom she asked in her capacity as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces to put the army on a higher level of alert so that it could protect the country's borders from illegal migrants if necessary, Hina learned from a source close to the Office of the President.
According to the same source, General Lovric has already taken measures to raise the level of readiness of the army.

Due to the escalation of the refugee crisis, Grabar-Kitarovic today cut short her visit to Istria and convened for Friday, at 11:30 hours, her Homeland Security Council, after which her position on the situation will be known and of which she will inform the National Security Council which is to hold a session on Friday afternoon.

During the day, Grabar-Kitarovic repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with developments on Croatia's eastern border, where large numbers of refugees from the Middle East have been arriving from Serbia.

"I have to analyse all information and I repeat that I am dissatisfied with what has been going on so far. I fear that the situation is getting out of control to some extent because it is not good when people cross your border illegally," she said.
