Bosnia could benefit from Peljesac bridge, says Presidency chair

Author: spez
SARAJEVO, July 20 (Hina) - The Peljesac bridge should not be any problem for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) because its construction could be used to the benefit of the country, Bosnian Presidency Chairman Dragan Covic said in Sarajevo on Monday.

Commenting on the Croatian government's announcement about planning the start of the construction of the Peljesac bridge, Covic told reporters that the issue was being overly politicised and that it should in fact be observed from the perspective of real interests, both Croatia's and Bosnia and Herzegovina's.

"If we approach that in the right way and not politicise the matter, it could be of multifold benefit for BiH," Covic said.

He explained that Bosnian authorities had previously discussed the bridge with European Union officials, for example, European Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations Commissioner Johannes Hahn.

During those talks, they asked that the Peljesac bridge be treated as a connection of the region as a constituent part of transport projects which include the Adriatic-Ionian motorway.

In that "packet", Covic suggested, it was estimated that, alongside the construction of the Peljesac bridge, that would connect Croatian territory, it would be logical that the Adriatic-Ionian motorway passes through a large part of BiH.

The route for that highway has not been defined precisely yet, however that project is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the region.

Croatia has not defined its position regarding that route, however authorities in Dubrovnik-Neretva County insist that it should pass through Croatian territory, fearing that otherwise Dubrovnik and its hinterland would remain permanently isolated.

Authorities in BiH have suggested that the Adriatic-Ionian motorway project be a continuation of the "Dalmatina" motorway which now ends at the border with BiH.

BiH proposes that Pocitelj in the south be a junction veering off to Corridor Vc toward Mostar, while another tangent of the Adriatic-Ionian motorway would pass through eastern Herzegovina toward the border with Montenegro.
