Croatian creative, cultural industries earn HRK 15 bln in revenue

Author: rmli
ZAGREB, July 7 (Hina) - Creative and cultural industries in Croatia have revenues in the amount of 15 billion kuna, they employ 124,000 people and are the second biggest sector in Croatia in terms of their share in GDP (3.5%), it was said at a presentation of results of a national study on creative and cultural sectors, made by the Zagreb Institute of Economics.

The sector of creative and cultural industries in Croatia has 12 sub-sectors made up of 45 activities, with the highest growth of added value being achieved by architecture, computer programming, games and new media, advertising, museums, libraries, heritage, film and photography.

Creative and cultural industries in Croatia have shown to be more resilient to the recession compared to other economic sectors, it was said at the presentation.

The share of added value created by companies in that sector in the national economy increased from 3.2% in 2009 to 3.5% in 2013, said Ivana Rasic of the Zagreb Institute of Economics.

The study shows that business entities in creative and cultural industries in 2013 accounted for as much as 5.7% of the total number of business entities in the national economy, employing 7.7% of all workers in the country.

Businesses in that sector had an average of 4.2 employees, as against the national average of 8.1 employees, which bears evidence of the fact that they are very much fragmented.

The creative and cultural industries in 2013 earned close to HRK 15 billion in revenues or 2.4% of the total revenue of all companies in Croatia and HRK 4.6 billion of gross added value or 3.5% of the gross added value of all companies.

"In the recession years, when the gross added value of the entire business sector in Croatia recorded a 4.7% decline, in the creative and cultural industries it grew 3.5%... The reason for that is a new business paradigm, with emphasis on small and good teams, investment in their education and in specialised production. The study shows that there is still room for sector expansion and intensification of activities, as well as for employment growth in this propulsive industry," said Ivana Nikolic Popovic of the Croatian Employers Association.
