Upon the receipt of the documentation, the EC considers requests and if it grants the request, the Commission publishes a document in the EU Official Gazette about the status awarded to the food in question.
"Krcki prsut", that is prosciutto from the northern island of Krk was registered as a product with the status of Protected Geographical Indication in mid-April.
More than 10 Croatian products are already in the process of receiving EU protected geographical status.
These include meat products from east Croatia, fermented cabbage (sauerkraut) from the western town of Ogulin, potato from the central area of Lika or olive oils from Croatian islands.
In order to receive the status of Protected Geographical Indication, the entire product must be traditionally or at least partially manufactured within the specific region and thus acquire unique properties.
