12,500 citizens receive debt write-off certificates

ZAGREB, Feb 11 (Hina) - So far 12,500 out of 75,000 eligible citizens have received certificates attesting that they meet the debt write-off conditions as part of the New Start scheme, Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said at a government session on Wednesday.

He said more and more local self-government units were signing agreements to write off the debts of the most destitute citizens whose bank accounts have been frozen for more than a year.

"This underscores and emphasises that this measure is based on agreement. This is something the government couldn't have adopted by sheer force, by law, but only through agreement with those who care about the well-being of citizens who have it hardest."

This shows the social nature and humanity of any government, regardless of political affiliation, Milanovic said.

According to Financial Agency records, 75,000 people qualify for a debt write-off, which is a big number because, in a way, it concerns 75,000 families, the PM said, adding that the write-off "is a way for these people to finally move forward in a better, new way. In that sense, we are a forward-moving government."

Milanovic said this measure was not a recipe for the economic growth of any state but for a new start for citizens with frozen bank accounts.
