Exhibition on Zagreb Synagogue to open in Venice on Sunday

Author: vmic
ZAGREB, Jan 17 (Hina) - The Jewish Community of Zagreb (ZOZ) will stage an exhibition on the Zagreb Synagogue at the Jewish Museum in Venice on January 18 as part of events marking the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and 70 years since the liberation of Auschwitz, the largest Nazi concentration camp.

The exhibition, entitled "Sinagoga di Zagabria 1867 - 1942 - 2015", will present the Zagreb Synagogue as one of the first buildings in a new urban centre which the city's chroniclers referred to as one of the city's landmark monuments, according to a ZOZ press release.

The opening of the exhibition will be attended by ZOZ president Ognjen Kraus, Zagreb rabbi Luciano Mose Prelevic and the president of the Jewish Community of Venice, Paolo Gnignati.

The ZOZ was established in 1806 and the synagogue was built in Praska Street in 1867. It was demolished in the spring of 1942 by the Ustasha regime that ruled Croatia during World War II, with the explanation that "it does not fit in the urban development plan."

About 11,000 Jews lived in Zagreb in 1941 and only five per cent of them survived the Holocaust, the ZOZ said.
