Split, Makarska hit by windstorm, freezing temperatures to cool Croatia

Author: mses
SPLIT/MAKARSKA, Dec 29 (Hina) - Strong winds reaching a speed of up to 160 kilometres per hour hit the Croatian Adriatic cities of Split and Makarska late on Sunday evening and Monday morning, and several trees felled by the windstorm damaged cars parked in their vicinity in Split.

An electricity pylon, destroyed by the windstorm, fell on a road in the Zrnovnica municipality near Split, blocking traffic.

Windstorms are expected to abate in the course of Monday, according to weather forecasts.

Snow storms swept the largest part of north and west Croatia and the Dalmatian hinterland on Sunday, but did not cause any extensive damage.

Snow has stopped falling but Croatia is now braced for temperatures below freezing in the coming days.
