EU unemployment stable in October, dips in Croatia

LUXEMBOURG/ZAGREB, Nov 28 (Hina) - The unemployment rate in the European Union in October stayed the same as in September, while dipping in Croatia, although Croatia's jobless rate remains among the highest in the EU, the EU statistical office Eurostat said on Friday.

The EU28 seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 10% in October 2014, stable compared with September 2014 and down from 10.7% in October 2013.

In the EU28, 24.413 million citizens were jobless in October, 42,000 more than in September.

Year-on-year, the number of the unemployed in the EU28 in October was down 1.594 million.

Germany again recorded the lowest unemployment rate in the EU28, 4.9% in October, followed by Austria (5.1%), while Greece had the highest rate (25.9% in August), followed by Spain (24%) and Croatia (16%) in October 2014, as against 16.1% the previous month and 17.6% in October 2013).

In October 2014, the youth unemployment rate was 21.6% in the EU28 compared with 23.3% in October 2013.

In October 2014, 4.983 million young persons (under 25) were unemployed in the EU28. Compared with October 2013, youth unemployment decreased by 504,000. Spain continues to lead in youth unemployment (53.8%), followed by Greece (49.3% in August), Italy (43.3%) and Croatia (41.5% in Q3).
