Restaurant owners call for lower VAT

Author: vmic
OPATIJA, Nov 25 (Hina) - Participants in the 27th congress of hospitality workers of the Croatian Chamber of Trades and Crafts (HOK) on Tuesday addressed their proposals to the government to amend regulations relating to taxes, education and employment in the restaurant and tourism trade in order to improve their business.

Among the main proposals is to reduce the VAT rate for cafes and restaurants from 13 to 10 percent and that such reduced rate should apply equally to all restaurant services.

Restaurant owners complained that it made no sense that food eaten in restaurants was subject to a VAT rate of 13 percent, while the same food eaten outside restaurants was taxed 25%.

HOK Catering and Tourism Guild president Ante Mihic proposed that inspectors should first warn restaurant owners of their omissions and fine them only after they repeated their mistakes, stressing that this would encourage restaurant owners to improve their services.
