One in two people with a savings account opts for classic saving, followed by life insurance, housing unions, voluntary pension saving and investment funds.
Men opt more for classic saving than women do, while women decide more frequently than men on voluntary pension saving and life insurance.
As in Croatia, classic saving is the most frequent type of saving in other central and eastern European countries as well - almost 80% of Austrians and more than 50% of Slovaks opt for that type of saving. The Czech mostly use pension insurance as the preferred form of saving, Hungarians and Serbs prefer life insurance, while Romanians invest their savings in gold or other precious metals.
In terms of the amount saved, Austrians are first with 188 euros per month, followed by Slovaks with 96 euros, and the Czech with 75 euros. Croatians save about 60 euros on average, followed by Hungarians with 49, Romanians with 41 and Serbians with 35 euros per month.
