EU summit reaches deal on 40% cut in CO2 emission by 2030

Author: mses
ZAGREB, Oct 24 (Hina) - The heads of state or government of the 28 European Union member-states reached an agreement early on Friday to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 percent in 2030 in comparison to the reference year of 1990, according to a Twitter message the European Council President Herman Van Rompuy posted.

Van Rompuy wrote in a tweet: "Deal! At least 40% emissions cut by 2030. World's most ambitious, cost-effective, fair #EU2030 climate energy policy agreed."

EU leaders, who convened in Brussels for a summit meeting on climate and energy, also reached a deal on two other 2030 targets: to increase renewable energy use to 27 percent of the total and to improve their measure of energy efficiency to at least 27 percent compared with what it would be under business as usual.

Upon his arrival in Brussels, Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic stated that would not be especially difficult for his country to comply with those set goals.

During their summit, the EU leaders formally approved the new European Commission at whose helm is Jean-Claude Juncker, who previously served as the Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 1995 to 2013.
