"Fiume o morte!" by Croatian author I. Bezinović wins IFFR Tiger Award

Author: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB,  8 Feb (Hina) - The documentary-fiction film "Fiume o morte!" by Croatian author Igor Bezinović won the Tiger Award, the Grand Prix of the  54th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), the Restart production company reported on Friday.

This is the first Croatian film to win the IFFR Tiger Award.

Bezinović’s film examines the consequences of the occupation of Rijeka in post-war 1919, after politicians failed to agree on whether the city should belong to the Kingdom of Italy or the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. To find answers, he engaged the citizens of Rijeka, who recount, reconstruct and reinterpret this bizarre story.

According to the explanatin which the festival jury provided n the IFFR website "this is a film where people and public spaces are used as co-conspirators in exploring the past through the prism of contemporary Europe. At times of the rise of ultra-nationalism within a contemporary European context, the film playfully grapples with the past not as a closed chapter, but as a living reality. "

It also added that "the film’s clash of staged reconstruction with real life refreshingly sheds light on the way history is continually present rather than preserved in aspic. While it is a playful and mischievous film, it presents a mirror to our present day."

The film was produced by Restart Production, with Vanja Jambrović and Tibor Keser as producers, in co-production with the company Nosorogi from Slovenia (co-producer Marina Gumzi) and Videomante from Italy (co-producer Erica Barbiani). The editing of the film’s trailer and teaser was done by Iva Kraljević.

The festival kicked off on 30 January and ends on Sunday, 9 February.
