Croatian soldier wins NATO military march in Baghdad

Author: Lana Lončarić

ZAGREB, 10 Dec (Hina) - Croatian Major Nikola Vlašić won the traditional DANCON March, a well-known endurance challenge, in which about 200 soldiers, police officers and civilians from NATO member states participated, the Ministry of Defence (MORH) said on Tuesday.

The military march was organised by the Danish contingent as part of the NATO mission in Iraq, on 7 December, at the UNION III base in Baghdad.

The winner of the race, Major Nikola Vlašić, won first place by running a 25-kilometre course while carrying ten kilogrammes of equipment on his back.

Besides him, five other members of the 12th Croatian contingent, who are in the NATO mission in Iraq, successfully completed the race.

"Members of all NATO member states as well as partner countries participated in this endurance competition, and the Croatian Armed Forces once again showed their strength and endurance," the ministry reported.

DANCON March was originally designed to test the physical endurance of soldiers in field conditions and at the same time encourage social interaction.

This race is a long-standing tradition and trademark of the Armed Forces of the Kingdom of Denmark, and was first held in 1972 during the UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus and has since been carried out in almost all NATO and UN operations and missions around the world.
