Croats in southern Argentina mark 33rd anniversary of Croatia's independence

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, 12 Oct (Hina) - The Croat community in Ushuaia, a city with 82,000 inhabitants at the southernmost tip of Argentina, has marked the 33rd anniversary of Croatia's independence.

The commemorative ceremony, held in the city square, was attended by local residents who cherish the traditions, values, symbols and beliefs of their Croat ancestors, a local paper reported.

Mónica Urquiza, deputy governor of Tierra del Fuego Province, recalled the role of the Croat community in Ushuaia's development.

Many generations of Croats have settled in our country, she said.

The local Croat community recalled that on 8 October 1991 the Croatian Sabor declared sovereignty and independence from Yugoslavia, which "was a decisive step towards the freedom and self-determination of the Croat people."

Those present at the commemoration also remembered all migrants from Croatia and their courage to settle in Tierra del Fuego, that remote corner of the world.

According to data from the Croatian Embassy in Buenos Aires, 300,000 persons of Croat descent live in Argentina.
