Over 100 children in Croatia diagnosed with malignant diseases annually

Author: Lana Lončarić;Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, 3 Sept (Hina) - Cancer is the second most common cause of death in children, and over a hundred children in Croatia are diagnosed with a malignant disease every year, the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ) said at the beginning of September, the month dedicated to raising awareness of cancer in children.

Incidence rates of malignant diseases in children in Croatia have been stable in the last 20 years, while mortality rates are decreasing by 1.8% per year, similar to other comparable countries, according to the HZJZ.

This month highlights the importance of early detection, research and development of better treatments, while at the same time providing support to patients and spreading awareness of the needs of the youngest patients. Through various campaigns and activities, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month reminds us of the importance of fighting together for a healthier future for children. It is symbolised by a golden ribbon.

Leukemia - the most common form of cancer in children

The latest published data from the HZJZ Cancer Registry show that in 2021, 115 children were diagnosed with a malignant disease, and the most common types of cancer were leukemia (34 cases), lymphomas (20 cases) and malignant tumors of the brain and central nervous system (14 cases).

At the age of four, 52 children were diagnosed with a malignant disease, 27 of them were between the ages of five and nine, and 36 between the ages of ten and 14.

Croatia above European average in terms of number of childhood cancer survivors

Data published in the medical journal The Lancet last year show that the five-year survival rate among children suffering from malignant diseases in Croatia is above the European average.

The survival rate for lymphoma is 95%, that for Acute lymphocytic leukemia is 85% and for brain tumours 73%.
