Round table on femicide: Media still not up to task and their role in society

Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, Feb 20 (Hina) - Even though significant progress has been made in reporting on femicide, given the proclaimed aspiration to gender equality, the legislative changes made and the institutional mechanisms promoting gender equality, the media are still not up to the task and the role they have in society, it was said at a round table discussion on the role of the media in forming the perception of violence against women and femicide.

Addressing the event, activist Sanja Sarnavka presented a publication on the media coverage of femicide in the period from 2012 to 2016, made as part of a project designed to improve the work of institutions for the prevention of violence against women.

The publication includes a survey of the media coverage of cases of murder of women in the Jutarnji List, Vecernji List and Slobodna Dalmacija dailies.

According to police data, in the 2012-2016 period, 90 women were murdered - 72 were killed by persons close to them, 38 were murdered by then or former spouses or common law partners, and five by then or former boyfriends.

In the surveyed newspapers, 753 articles on femicide were found and analysed.

Sarnavka underlined that the reports were characterised by a scarcity of data and facts.

According to a media analysis done by Gender Equality Ombudswoman Visnja Ljubicic, the topic that has been most frequently reported about, for the second year in a row, is violence against women and domestic violence (38%). However, media reporting continues to be sensationalist and often directly or indirectly shifts responsibility from the perpetrator to the victim, she said.
