Sibenik Festival of Alternative and Left opens with exhibition of posters on October Revolution

ZAGREB, Aug 27 (Hina) - The 5th Sibenik Festival of the Alternative and the Left (FALIS) will start in that coastal city on September 6 with an exhibition of posters by world-famous graphic designers on the topic of the October Revolution, a project by Russian curator Sergei Serov called "1917-2017".

Serov is the president of the Moscow international graphic design bienniale "Golden Bee", a vice-president of the Academy of Graphic Design and a professor and department head at the RANHiGS school of design.

In late 2016 Serov contacted the world's best known graphic designers proposing that they give, using poster language, their personal position on the events in Russia of 100 years ago.

Forty-nine works selected for the Sibenik exhibition arrive in that city after having been staged in Moscow, and before being displayed in Germany, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Montenegro and the United States.

The works to be put on display include those made by Majid Abbasi (Iran), Peter Bankov (Russia-Czech Republic), Lex Drewinski (Germany), Milton Glaser (USA), Mirko Ilic (USA), Elmer Sosa (Mexico) and Péter Pócs (Hungary).

Serov's global poster campaign reveals that most designers and artists from various countries have a negative perception of the 1917 revolution and Vladimir Ilyich Lenin himself.

A survey shows that only four percent of works from Russia and only 8% of those from other countries give a positive assessment of the revolution, while 72% of posters from Russia and 57% of those from other countries give it an assessment which, according to the survey authors, boils down to the view "Revolution is horror".

The 5th FALIS festival, taking place from 5 to 9 September, features numerous promotions, exhibitions and round table debates. This year's event is marking the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution.
